Christian Music
Music is such a big part of my life. I love to have music playing and I love to sing. I am not a great singer, but I love to do it. I used to love to play piano and desperately want to relearn. Music is fun, fills the times when you do not want quiet and it speaks to you. I love music of all kinds. I am a big country girl so I love country, the oldies are so much fun, and I am a really big sucker for love songs. I can really listen to just about any kind of music and love it.
About two years ago I was trying to deepen my relationship with God and decided to give up any music that was not Christian. In the beginning it was hard. It was hard not to listen to those fun upbeat songs that make you want to tap your feet. But I quickly realized what kind of influence secular music was having on me. The music videos were becoming R rated so seeing girls dress this way or act this way in really life was no longer a big deal to me. The words were so negative that my attitude was becoming increasingly negative. The subject matter of the songs never followed along with want God wants for our lives. So listening to this music was having a very negative influence on not only my life, but the lives of my children.
Very soon after giving up secular music I found myself worshipping more. I desired more of God. I also found that Christian music is so much fun! You can still tap your toes along to. My kids find it absolutely amazing when we read something in the Bible and it has become a popular Christian song. But that is the point. Christian music comes from God's Word. Many, many times, it comes straight from the Bible. Other times it is simply to encourage us. And boy does it!
My favorite radio station, Klove, offered a challenge to their listeners. For the month of January only listen to Christian music. I want to offer that challenge here. Find a great Christian station and leave the radio set on it. Pull out great Christian cds or set the ipod to only play Christian. At the end of the month see if your outlook is more positive. See if you felt more encouraged and uplifted. I can honestly say that listening to only Christian music will truly bless you. Another awesome effect of listening to Christian music is hearing the kiddos walking around singing songs of worship, not of loving a guy or hating the world. So turn up the Christian tunes and be encouraged!
Sweet Blessings~
Love this, for me listening to KLove all day really helps me get through the day at work, it puts Gods words in my head through song and all that other junk playing out there is just bad for the soul as it is. Thanks for this great post I LOVE music too! <3 ya!
ReplyDeleteMany years ago, I only listened to a local Christian radio station...that station closed. There were no other 'good' Christian radio stations that I liked so I just went back to my 'Country' roots! I, too, LOVE country music! Then one day last year I thought I would give KLove a try! It was weird at first but it grew on me! Now, it's all I listen to in my home and in my car. I love that I am hearing the 'WORD' in song!
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great post. I love music and I love the Christian music. I wish that I could sing so I could sing along with the songs. We don't listen to just Christian music. I don't know if there is still a station that plays country Christian but when I hear it my heart will melt. Blessings to you.
ReplyDeleteI used to love country music too, but then I started really listening to the lyrics. They were not uplifting or glorifying to God at all. Now I only listen to Christian music. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat post Jenifer!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, where we live there's no Christian radio station in reception distance, but I do have quite a bit of appropriate music on my iPod, and listen to it regularly. We're also very careful to filter what we do listen to, and try to avoid anything with bad messages. (I'm an old folk music junkie myself... lol)
Have a Blessed Day!
I love watching my children singing along to Chris Tomlin, Press Play, Newsboys, and other Christian artists. It's not forced upon them and they choose to let those songs fill their mouths and their testimony. Great post.

Phil, in case you are interested, you can listen to the above station online. Just go to www.klove.com, as well as their sister station (though a little more on the rock side) www.air1.com. The djs are wonderful and always so much fun. They have a daily scripture as well. I love listening to Klove! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I awarded you a Stylish Blogger award. Details on my blog. I hope you get many new visitors to this special blog.
ReplyDeleteKaren, wow! Thanks! I'll jump over to your blog to check it out. I appreciate you!
ReplyDeleteI didnt realize until I made the switch to Christian music, how much secular music affected my attitude, in a negative way. There is so much great Christian music out there it is easier to make the switch! Speaking of which we are seeing Matthew West Thursday night,...so excited!!
ReplyDeleteAnother great post! I never have listened to secular music, my parents taught us to love Christian music and that is what I love. I occasionally listen to the classics, Bach, Strauss, and such. I love them, and apparently a lot of them are actually hymns. Thanks for the info on KLOVE, I had not heard of that one. But it's playing now!
ReplyDeleteLove and hugs, Cindy
You should check out Lecrae on iTunes. He has some of the best lyrics Ive heard. It's hip-hop so it took me a little while to get use to it but, the Lord has taught me more biblical truths through his music than anyone else.
ReplyDeleteREBEL and REHAB are my two favorite CDs from him.
Thanks for linking up, hope to see you next week :)

I did the same thing a couple of years ago because I could feel the negative effects that secular music had one me. Choosing to listen only to Christian music definitely changed my outlook and helped purify my heart. Also, thanks for stopping by my blog today :)
ReplyDeleteYou are so right. I too listen to our local Christian station. I have been doing that for 3 years now. I love the messages in each song and they way they make me feel. Some of my favorites are Natalie Grant, Third Day and Casting Crowns. Love them! =)
