The Cure for the Perfect Life

Have you ever said, "If I want something done right, I just have to do it myself"? I have. Many, many times.

I used to be afraid of asking my kids for help, giving them the simplest of chores, for fear they wouldn't do it right. When the weather was nasty outside and my husband would offer to go to the grocery store for me, I was afraid he wouldn't do it right, starving seemed better than him getting the wrong stuff. For a long time my husband and I were afraid of asking someone to help in our children's ministry because we were afraid they wouldn't do it right. Things have to be just perfect, so, well, I better do it myself.

In their new book, The Cure for the "Perfect" Life, authors Kathi Lipp and Cheri Gregory tell us that this perfection is a bully. Call it like it is huh?

Why do we strive for this perfection? Why do we let it bully us? Most of the time it is fear of failure. We fear if we don't bring the perfect dish to the church potluck, someone will think ill of us. We give up something if we do not master it quickly. If we don't perfect that Pinterest craft just so, we feel like a failure. Our bully tells us over and over that we have to be perfect.

  1. Ah yes, the church pot-luck dilemma! When we were first married, moving into our first house where the refrigerator was broken, I had the audacity to bring a package of store-bought cookies to a church pot-luck. The woman placing the dishes mumbled, " I guess all one needs to bring is a package of cookies..." Though I was a little embarrassed, I knew, even at a young age, that she was the one for whom I ought to feel sorry. So thankful that Christ knows our circumstances, our efforts and our hearts!
