THE CHRISTIAN CAPITALIST

For the love of money is a root of

all kinds of evil, and by craving it,

some have wandered away from

the faith and pierced themselves

with many griefs.

Many people read this verse in 1 Timothy and automatically think money is bad. They misquote the verse to say, "Money is the root of all evil." When in fact, the verse says, "Love of money is the root of all evil." The truth is, we need money to survive in this world.

Because we need money, we need to work. But not only do we need to work to have money to survive, we were created to work. Rich Sanders says in his book, The Christian Capitalist, "What do we know about God? In the very first verses of the Holy Bible, the book of Genesis tells us one thing about God: He works!" We were created to work, to be productive people.

We were also created to give. Whether it is giving our tithe back to God, giving an offering, helping missionaries, buying groceries for a single mom, lunch for someone hungry, or whatever the case may be, we were created to be generous givers.

Sanders tells us, "The second characteristic we know about God from Hebrew Scripture is that He is generous. He gives humans everything they need: whether it is Adam and Eve int he Garden of Eden, Noah and all the animals in the kingdom and a fresh start, we find God abundantly generous with the results of His hard work."

Money in itself is not bad. In fact, it is good. We need money to give our tithe back to God, pay our bills, to feed our families, to give to others, and to save for our future. Instead, our culture often teaches us that we need money to build fat bank accounts, buy six dollar coffees and fifty dollar cups, to have fancy cars and elaborate homes. What our culture doesn't teach us is to be wise with our money, and it definitely doesn't teach us to be generous with our money. Our culture has also quit teaching us to be hard workers, instead it gives get-rich-quick steps that rarely work. All this often results in so much financial hardship and even selfish people.

In The Christian Capitalist: The Gospel of Hard Work and Generous Giving, Rich Sanders teaches us what it means to be hard workers, showing examples straight from the Word of God. He also teaches us what it is to be a generous giver, again, with examples from the Bible. He shows us that money isn't bad, we just have to learn to manage it in a Biblical way.
